Spotting and Reporting Elder Abuse

Elder abuse is a pervasive problem in the United States. Though the total number of victims is unknown, experts believe one in 10 elderly people may suffer some form of abuse at the hands of a relative or caretaker. Of those cases, as few as one in five may be reported. Sadly, this means that many seniors are left violated and hurt without help.

For those with elderly loved ones in nursing homes or assisted living facilities, it is important to learn the signs of elder abuse and neglect. This is the first step in helping protect your loved one and preventing abuse.

Types of Abuse

Abuse can be anything from physical abuse to neglect to emotional abuse. Physical abuse is typically the easiest to spot. Look for problems like unusual bruises or bleeding, burns, abrasions or open wounds. Bedsores or unexplainable weight changes can be signs of neglect, as can poor hygiene or the smell or presence of urine or feces.

Emotional abuse may be harder to spot. If your loved one is acting listless, unresponsive, or withdrawn, you may need to take a closer look at his or her care. If personal items begin to disappear, unusual financial transactions occur, or the person starts exhibiting strange or infant-like behaviors, these are all signs that there may be a problem.

Make sure that you get some alone time with your loved one when you visit. If staff will not leave the room, this can be a sign of controlling behavior. Also, if the staff that is contributing to the abuse is in the room, your loved one is not going to open up about any problems.

In addition to having an attorney help you, contact your local adult protective services agency if you suspect a problem. If your loved one is being abused, chances are other adults at the same facility are as well.
